Privacy policy

AzanNow is built to work with as little personal data as possible. We do not have user accounts, we do not sell data and we do not show personalised advertising. To see how the site is used we count visits ourselves, on our own server; no third-party analytics service is used (see “Analytics”).
Your location
- From your IP address. To suggest your city on the home page, our server looks up the approximate location of your IP address in a database stored on our own server (DB-IP). Our server does not store the IP address for this and does not pass it on.
- From your device. If you press “Use my location”, your browser asks for permission and sends your coordinates, rounded to about 10 metres, to our server, which returns the nearest city. The coordinates are not stored. On the Qibla page the direction is calculated in your browser and your location never leaves your device.
Cookies and local storage
- If you change the calculation settings, we store them in a cookie named
azsfor one year. It contains only the chosen method, Asr rule, high-latitude rule and time format. - Your browser remembers the last city you viewed (local storage), so the home page can show it next time. You can clear it with your browser settings.
- A random number in local storage (
az:vid) lets our own visit statistics tell a returning visitor from a new one; see “Analytics”. - Your browser keeps the addresses of the last 10 pages you opened here (local storage) and, for the current visit, the site you came from. They leave your device only with a message you send through the contact form; see “Contact form”.
- If you are asked to pass a short “are you a person” check (see “Protection from automated traffic”), passing it sets a cookie named
hcfor 30 days so you are not asked again.
The adhan, reminders and offline use
- If you switch on the adhan or the reminders, the choice is kept in your browser’s local storage. The adhan is played by the open page itself.
- Reminders appear only after you allow notifications in your browser. They are created on your device by the open page: we do not use a push service, and no address for sending you messages ever reaches us.
- To work without a connection, for example when installed as an app, your browser keeps copies of the pages you opened most recently (up to 30) on your device. Clearing the site’s data in your browser removes them.
Analytics
We keep simple visit statistics on our own server and share them with no one: which pages were opened, the site you came from, your country (looked up from the IP address, which is not stored), the type of device and browser, which features were used (for example, the Qibla compass or a calendar download), searches that found no results and how long a page stayed on screen. A returning visitor is recognised by the random number in local storage; where local storage is unavailable, by a one-way code made from the IP address and browser that changes every day and cannot be turned back into the address. Detailed records are deleted after 90 days; only daily totals are kept.
Contact form
A message you send through the contact form reaches us through a messaging service, together with your name and email address, the time, your IP address and country, the type of browser, the calculation settings you chose on this site, the site you came from and the last pages you opened here. We use them only to answer you and to look into what you report; our server does not keep the messages. To limit spam, it counts for an hour how many messages come from each IP address, kept as a one-way code.
Protection from automated traffic
Some networks are used to copy the site automatically. Visitors from those networks, or whose browser identifies itself as one of certain automated crawlers, are asked to click a few digits in a picture before the site opens. For this check our server records the time, IP address, browser type and the result; these records are deleted after 45 days.
Server logs
Like every website, our web server keeps technical logs (time, requested address, browser type and IP address) for security and troubleshooting. They are deleted after 14 days. The site is delivered through a content delivery network, which also processes IP addresses to deliver the pages and protect them from attacks. The same applies to our prayer times widget on other websites, which otherwise sets no cookies and sends no statistics.
