Ramadan guide

Suhoor, imsak and Fajr

Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal. The fast begins at Fajr, the moment of true dawn, so eating and drinking must stop by then. Many timetables also show imsak, usually ten minutes before Fajr, as a margin of safety.

Iftar and Maghrib

The fast ends at sunset, the time of Maghrib. It is sunnah to break it without delay, traditionally with dates and water, before praying Maghrib.

How long is the fast?

The length of the fast depends on your latitude and on the season. When Ramadan falls in winter, fasts in northern Europe are short, while in summer they can last 18 hours or more. Each city timetable shows the shortest and longest fast of the month.

Tarawih and Laylat al-Qadr

Tarawih prayers are held after Isha every night of Ramadan, starting on the evening before the first fast. Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is sought in the odd nights of the last ten days; each of these nights begins at Maghrib of the preceding day.

Zakat al-Fitr and Eid

Zakat al-Fitr is due before the Eid prayer. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal with a prayer held after sunrise.

Why the start date may differ

Our dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Many communities start Ramadan after sighting the new crescent, so the first fast in your country may be one day later. Follow the announcement of your local mosque or authority.
