How the Qibla direction is calculated
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah. We calculate it as the initial bearing of the great circle – the shortest route over the surface of the Earth – from your location to the Kaaba, measured clockwise from true north.
Why the Qibla from America points north-east
On a flat map Makkah seems to lie to the south-east of New York, but the shortest path over the globe leaves New York towards the north-east (about 58°) and crosses the Atlantic. This is why mosques in North America face north-east. The same effect makes the Qibla from Japan point west-north-west rather than due west.
True north and magnetic north
Our angles are measured from true (geographic) north. A magnetic compass points to magnetic north, which can differ by several degrees depending on where you are. Phone compasses usually correct for this automatically when location access is allowed.
Using your phone as a compass
- Open this page on your phone: the compass turns with the phone by itself, or after a tap on “Use my phone’s compass” (always needed on an iPhone). Turn until the arrow meets the Kaaba mark at the top – the dial turns green when you face the Qibla.
- Hold the phone flat, away from metal objects, magnets and electrical equipment.
- If the direction looks wrong, calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure-of-eight.
- For a fixed prayer place, it helps to check the direction against a landmark or the sun: at solar noon, outside the tropics, the sun is due south in the northern hemisphere and due north in the southern.
